Question: What is a Put and a Call?

Hi Raviranjankhan,
Thanks for submitting your question.

Answer: These are both basic Stock Option contracts with different underlying purposes. Each Option contract can represent an individual stock, ETF or Index for example.

A Call Option is a contract that gives the buyer of the Call the right, but not the obligation, to buy shares of the represented stock (or other represented security) at some point in the future at a pre-determined price.

A Put Option is a contract that gives the buyer of the Put the right, but not the obligation, to sell shares of the represented stock (or other represented security) at some point in the future at a pre-determined price.

Besides using Options for short term trading strategies, they can be used in conjunction with a long term investing strategy as well.

Like any other new area you may be venturing into, make sure you take time to learn as much as possible first, to fully understand how it works and the potential outcomes.

I hope this information helps,
Larry

Options and Risk
by: Brad Castro

On my site, www.great-option-trading-strategies.com, I try to make two very important points about options.

First, options are primarily about the trading of risk. You can use them to reduce risk to your portfolio or you can use them as a potentially lucrative way to be compensated for assuming someone else's risk.

Second, when it comes to options, risk is a dial, not a switch. Just about any option trade can be made more risky or less risky.

For those new to options who are considering trading them, I would encourage you to take it slow and spend some time really learning all you can about them beforehand.

Options are very powerful financial instruments that can help you achieve your goals more quickly than you can with a stock only (or especially a mutual fund) portfolio. But they can also ravage your portfolio if you're too reckless with them.

Good luck!
