Where Can You Find If A Stock Is Being Bought By Its Own Company?

Share

I received a question earlier back in late January about "Where Can You Find If A Stock Is Being Bought By Its Own Company?"

I guess we can take a look at this question in a couple of different ways in this article.

The first will be about the actual Company itself buying its own stock, which would be a "Stock Buyback".

The second will be taking a look at if major shareholders such as board members, officers and founders are buying shares of stock. These are called "Insiders".

Stock Buyback: I will get into these in more detail on another page about some advantages and other specifics, but for this article we want to know where to look to do our research.

A Stock Buyback is also known as a "Share Repurchase" or "Stock Repurchase" at times. There are paid subscription services that keep track of Stock Buybacks such as The Buyback Letter and then there's the old fashioned way, performing stock market research on your own.

When a company decides to move forward with a stock buyback, they will make an announcement. This announcement will be in some form of Press Release to make the public aware of their intentions.

To research this on your own, you can go to a Press Release website such as BusinessWire and use their search tool in the upper right corner. Type in either "Stock Buyback" or Share Repurchase" and click "Go" and you'll get the results to go through.

Here is a link to a search on their website for Stock Buyback. You'll find a listing of recent articles to go through.

You'll see that you can also adjust the Date Range if you'd like to search other then current time periods for your results query.

Insiders: You can find information on Insider transactions by researching SEC Filings. I have written a separate page on this in the past here: SEC Filings where you can find more details about this.

Basically, by researching SEC Filings, you'll be able to see when Insiders are buying and/or selling shares of company stock in which they are major shareholders, officers or board members.
